Who is Troy Snitker? As Mets hire new hitting coach, here are 3 things to know

In the midst of the final week of the Major League Baseball postseason, the Mets continue to build toward 2026 before they drop headlong into the offseason.

The Mets will be hiring Troy Snitker to fill their hitting coach vacancy, according to multiple reports Monday. SNY’s Andy Martino was the first to report the news of the addition.

The addition of Snitker comes after the Mets promoted Jeff Albert to be their new director of major league hitting and announced Kai Correa as the club’s newest bench coach. The team has yet to hire a new pitching coach after Jeremy Hefner was relieved of his duties following the Mets’ disappointing 2025 season.

The Mets must also make up for the loss of bullpen coach Desi Druschel, who will reportedly be returning to the Yankees after one season in Flushing.

But with the club’s leaders of their hitting program solidified, here are three things to know about Snitker before he takes the helm as Mets hitting coach.

Troy Snitker was a winner with Astros

Snitker joined the Astros in 2016 as a coach for the organization’s Gulf Coast League team and their rehabilitation hitting coordinator. In the next two seasons, he was the hitting coach for the club’s Single A and Double A affiliates.

Ultimately, Snitker was promoted to become one of the Astros’ hitting coaches alongside Alex Cintrón.

Together, the tandem helped the Astros win the World Series in the 2022 season while also winning the American League pennant in three seasons. They also won the AL West in five of the seven seasons with Snitker leading the Astros’ hitters.

In 2019, Yordan Alvarez won Rookie of the Year and Alex Bregman was runner-up for AL MVP. With Snitker helping to lead the charge, five separate Astros have finished in top five in MVP voting in the last seven seasons.

Troy Snitker’s father is a former MLB manager

That’s right, Troy Snitker is the son of former Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker, who spent the last four decades with the club as a coach.

Troy Snitker was born in the offseason when his dad was serving as the Braves’ bullpen coach in 1988.

That led to Troy’s strong Georgia ties, with the 36-year-old attending Brockwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, before moving on to South Georgia College and the University of North Georgia.

After 10 years as Braves manager, including a World Series crown in 2021, Brian Snitker has stepped down and will be moving into an advisory role with the Braves next season.

Troy Snitker’s playing career

Troy Snitker was a catcher during his playing career and was drafted by the Braves in the 19th round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

His playing career in the minor leagues was brief as he spent 36 games in the Gulf Coast League in 2011 before being promoted to Single A Rome. He spent 25 games in Rookie ball in 2012 and one game in High-A Lynchburg.

After being sold to the Pirates for cash in 2013, Snitker elected to play in the independent Atlantic League, where he played only five games.

Snitker returned to coach his alma mater North Georgia as a graduate assistant in 2015.
