Vikings Cut Former SEC Star Quarterback Days After Signing

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback room continues to change heading into the 2024 regular season. On Monday, August 26, one day before the NFL’s 53-man roster cut deadline, the Vikings waived former SEC star quarterback Matt Corral.

The move comes just nine days after Minnesota signed the Ole Miss product as a potential backup following a season-ending injury to first-round rookie J.J. McCarthy. Corral was one of 14 players cut by Minnesota, who got a jump on the expected frenzy of roster moves to come on Tuesday. If the 25-year-old clears waivers this week, he will be free to sign with any of the NFL’s 32 teams, most likely on a practice squad.

Corral was originally drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. In what was a notably weak quarterback draft class, Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett (No. 20 overall to the Steelers) was the only signal-caller selected in the first two rounds. Corral spent four years playing for the University of Mississippi from 2018 to 2021, appearing in 37 games (27 starts) over that span.

He threw for 8,287 yards, 57 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in his collegiate career. The 6-foot-2 California native, who has had stints with multiple NFL teams, has not played in a regular season game to date.
