West Ham submit transfer offer for questionable Jhon Duran backup plan

West Ham have been closely linked with a move for Jhon Duran, but the price for the Aston Villa backup striker continues to go up, infuriating many Hammers supporters.

Aston Villa want 40 million pounds for Jhon Duran

Aston Villa are holding out for 40 million pounds, and it appears they will only consider an offer from West Ham appropriate if it means this exact evaluation in cash.

West Ham tried to offer 32 million pounds plus talented 18-year-old midfielder Lewis Orford, a fan favorite of the club. Aston Villa rejected the offer, much to the relief of supporters who absolutely did not want to see Orford and a significant wad of cash heading to a rival for European places.

West Ham have made an offer for Alexander Sorloth

As West Ham get closer to offering the 40 million pounds Aston Villa are looking for, they are also monitoring alternative transfer targets to the 20-year-old Colombian striker.

According to a report from Spanish outlet El Periodico Mediterraneo, West Ham have made a transfer offer to LaLiga side Villarreal for their striker Alexander Sorloth, who has a 38 million euro release clause. It’s unclear how high the initial offer was.

Alexander Sorloth had nearly 30 goal contributions last season

Sorloth would thus be a little bit cheaper than Duran, and he is more experienced. In fact, Sorloth had a wonderful 2023/24 season for the Yellow Submarine, scoring 23 goals with 6 assists.

The 28-year-old Norwegian international has always been a great goal-scorer, showing a keen eye for goal as early as 2019/20 for Trabzonspor in Turkey, which even landed him rumored interest from Real Madrid at the time.

Alexander Sorloth flopped at Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig

Sorloth, however, flopped badly in the Premier League for Crystal Palace, even if he has found success in LaLiga years later for Real Sociedad and now Villarreal. Even before LaLiga, Sorloth could not get on at RB Leipzig, which is usually a haven for strikers.

If West Ham were to pay the full amount of Sorloth’s release clause, they would be investing a lot of money in a striker with a poor Premier League track record and no resale value, even if he did have a tremendous 2023/24 season in Villarreal.
