Wolverhampton Wanderers have opened talks with Ajax over the potential signing of Portuguese winger Carlos Forbs, according to reports in Portugal.
The 20-year-old has caught the eye of the Premier League side. He joined the Dutch giants from Manchester City last summer but could be on the move again.
Initial contact has been made between the two clubs, but Wolves have been met with a hefty asking price from Ajax.
However, the report suggests that the Midlands outfit is not deterred and could pursue a deal further down the line.
Forbs is a Portugal Under-21 international and has shown glimpses of his immense potential since swapping the Etihad for the Amsterdam Arena.
Despite limited game time, he contributed two goals and four assists in 21 Eredivisie appearances last season. His electric pace and dribbling ability have seen him compared to some of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
The winger’s journey to the top has been rapid. After coming through the ranks at Manchester City, where he netted an impressive 26 goals and provided 13 assists for the Under-23s, he moved to Ajax in a deal worth £16 million.
With Pedro Neto reportedly close to joining Chelsea, Wolves are in the market for a replacement wide attacker.
Forbs’ profile fits the bill, offering youth, pace, and attacking flair. His signing could be wise business for Wolves if they can get a deal over the line.
Wolves fans will hurt to see Neto leave, but it has been coming for a while following interest from Premier League heavyweights like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Wolves will receive a record fee for the Portugal international, eclipsing the £53 million Manchester City paid for Matheus Nunes.
The Midlands club could demand more for Neto, but his injury history means clubs may not be willing to splash the cash for his signature.
