Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees are gearing up for the start of the 2026 MLB season. With spring training coming up quickly, the team will soon begin its quest for a World Series run.
Last season, the Yankees finished the year with a 94-68 record. That was good enough to finish second in the American League East division behind the Toronto Blue Jays. They got into the postseason, but things did not go according to plan.
New York was able to defeat the rival Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card, but quickly were eliminated by the Blue Jays in the ALDS.
Throughout the MLB offseason, the Yankees have not been overly aggressive. They were able to re-sign star outfielder Cody Bellinger, but no other big moves were made. Some fans are frustrated and concerned about the lack of improvement from outside of the roster.
With that being said, Boone has been handed an ominous warning before the start of the 2026 campaign.
New York Yankees Skipper Hit With Concerning Warning
Ian O’Connor of The Athletic warned Boone that he need to find a way to win a World Series while Aaron Judge is still in the prime of his career. He suggests that New York consider moving on from Boone if he can’t get it done this year.
“Judge just needs to win one before it’s too late. If Boone can’t help him get there after nine attempts, then someone else should get a chance to try,” O’Connor wrote.
Boone also received more criticism from O’Connor when being compared to legendary Yankees manager Joe Torre.
“Boone’s postseason winning percentage (.481) is 103 points lower than his regular-season winning percentage,” O’Connor wrote. “Joe Torre, four-time champ, had a postseason winning percentage with the Yankees (.618) that was 13 points higher than his regular-season winning percentage in those 12 years.”
At the end of the day, the 2026 season could be a make-or-break year for Boone. If he can’t find a way to win it all soon, New York might be forced to consider change.
Where Are the Yankees Projected to Finish the 2026 Season?
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has shared his projection for the Yankees this season. He is expecting another second place finish in the AL East, once again coming in behind Toronto.
In addition to predicting New York to finish second in the division, Bowden also revealed the biggest question mark the Yankees need to answer this season.
“Can Cole and Rodón bounce back from their injuries to give the Yankees one of the best starting rotations in baseball?”
That is a question that could decide the outcome of the 2026 season for New York. There is more than enough talent on the Yankees’ roster to compete for a World Series run. It is now up to Boone to get the most out of that talent and actually make the run.
