The Boston Bruins have added forward depth this offseason, but their work may not be done yet.
Sean Kuraly, Viktor Arvidsson and Tanner Jeannot all bring experience and energy to Boston’s reshaped lineup. Still, questions remain about the middle six — particularly when it comes to upside and offensive skill. One name gaining traction as a potential target: Columbus Blue Jackets winger Yegor Chinakhov.
The 23-year-old forward has officially asked out of Columbus. Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell acknowledged the request and told The Athletic that discussions about a possible move are already underway.
According to Michael DeRosa of The Hockey News, Boston would be wise to get involved.
“(Boston) should seriously consider pursuing Chinakhov,” DeRosa wrote. “Given the Bruins’ need for both more youth and skill, Chinakhov is precisely the kind of forward that they should be taking a chance on.”
Despite injuries limiting him to 30 games last season, Chinakhov still managed seven goals and 15 points. He put together his best NHL season in 2023-24, posting 16 goals and 29 points over 53 games. With a clean bill of health and a fresh start, there is a real chance he finds another level.
A first-round pick in 2020, Chinakhov was widely viewed as a draft-day reach by Columbus. But his hands, vision and off-puck instincts have since proven legit. He attacks space with quick fakes, cuts sharply through traffic and can support the cycle with smart reads — traits the Bruins could definitely use more of.
If Boston believes there is another gear to Chinakhov’s game, this might be the ideal buy-low moment.
With only one year left on his current contract, the cost may be manageable — and the reward, significant.
