Nathan Jones full of praise for Charlton as get to Round 2

It was a special evening for 18 year old academy product Ibrahim Fullah as he scored his first professional goal in his first start for Charlton Athletic as the Championship side eased into Round 2 of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 win over Stevenage.

Miles Leaburn got the first goal of the evening, Fullah doubled the lead for the home side just before the break and Luke Berry made it 3-0 on 77 minutes. Stevenage would pull a goal back through Lewis Freestone but it was only a consolation.

Charlton manager, Nathan Jones, was exuberant not only over Fullah’s first goal but his overall performance playing in a position that was unnatural to him.

“It won’t be his last goal for sure.”

“He is a fantastic footballer, he is energetic, confident among other great qualities.’

‘He is not naturally a wing back but we asked him to do a job and he did that really well so I’m very proud of him.”

Jones was very pleased with the overall performance in a team that saw eleven changes to the 1-0 win against Watford from Saturday.

“The main thing was to win and to be into the hat for the next round.”

“We made eleven changes which showed the strength and depth of the squad.”

“Stevenage are a very good side and have started the season very well so I am very pleased with the win.”

For Charlton, their attention now turns to a tough away fixture in the Championship against Bristol City who are coming off a brilliant 4-1 opening weekend win away at Sheffield United.

Jones admitted it would be a game where his side would need to be at their best.

“It will be a very tough test.”

“They had a great result at the weekend and we know every Championship game demands the best version of ourselves”

“We’ve managed to rest and rotate tonight so we can prepare properly.”
