Aston Villa handed double injury boost ahead of Viking Champions League clash

Ian Maatsen and George Hemmings both trained at Bodymoor Heath ahead of Aston Villa’s Champions League clash against Viking FK.

Maatsen was ruled out for five weeks with an ankle injury sustained against Nottingham Forest last month, but missed only five matches thanks to the extended international break.

Unai Emery will speak to the media on Tuesday afternoon, when he will be asked to provide an update on Maatsen, who could now be included in the squad to face Viking FK.

Villa are facing a crisis at left-back, with Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both nursing hamstring injuries. Wan-Bissaka came off in the second half against Newcastle.

Tyrone Mings subsequently shifted to left-back to see out the 1-0 win, operating in a role he previously played at Ipswich Town and Bournemouth earlier in his career.

Hemmings, meanwhile, hasn’t featured for Villa this side of the extended international break due to a knee injury. He could now return to the squad after being involved in full training.

Johan Manzambi picked up a knock against Newcastle on Saturday night and asked to be substituted in the second half. Emery will be asked to provide an update on him as well.

Manzambi has started Villa’s last five matches after recovering from a knee injury that delayed his start at the club following his £52 million move from SC Freiburg.

Villa are targeting a third consecutive Champions League win on Wednesday night after beating Club Brugge and Fenerbahce. The 6-0 victory over Fenerbahce was Villa’s biggest-ever win in European competition and their record victory under Emery across all competitions.
