Alex Ovechkin beats old friend Darcy Kuemper for 903rd NHL goal

Don’t look now, but Alex Ovechkin is heating up.

Ovechkin has now scored in consecutive games and has three goals of his last four after beating Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper, his former teammate. Ovechkin’s latest strike came after Connor McMichael found him wide open in front of the net after Cody Ceci blew his coverage.

Ovechkin’s snapshot put the Capitals up 2-0 over the Kings 1:51 into the second period. McMichael and Jakob Chychrun were awarded the assists.

Ovechkin now has six goals in 19 games this season, putting him on pace for 25 this year. Even more encouraging, Ovi leads the team with eight points (4g, 4a) in the Caps’ last seven games.

The tally marks the third time Ovechkin has beat Kuemper with a shot in his career. Kuemper played two seasons in Washington before being traded during the 2024 offseason to Los Angeles for Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Since being put together by Spencer Carbery, the Caps’ first line — consisting of Ovechkin, McMichael, and Dylan Strome — has three goals in the last two games. Ovechkin has found paydirt twice while McMichael has found the back of the net once.
