Victor Wembanyama reveals Gregg Popovich’s ‘bad’ text message after Game 1

The San Antonio Spurs are down 1-0 in the NBA Finals to the New York Knicks, and they’ll be looking to tie the series in Game 2. The Spurs held on for most of the game, and also had a lead in the second half, but the Knicks came storming back, something they’ve been good at all postseason.

It was a rough final few minutes for the Spurs, and for Victor Wembanyama, as he tried to reel his team to victory but to no avail. Though it looked like Wembanyama had a good game when looking at his points, the Knicks forced him into some tough shots throughout the night.

Throughout the series, the Spurs have been getting encouraging notes from Gregg Popovich, and a reporter asked Wembanayama before Game 2 if he had spoken to the coaching legend.

“I haven’t talked to him yet, but yes, he’s texted me,” Wembanyama said. “In the big lines, it was that I’ve been bad and I’m better than this.”

Popovich has never been afraid to say how he feels about something, and he probably knows telling Wembanyama that he hasn’t played well is only going to light a fire in him.

The good thing is that Wembanyama also knows that he hasn’t played well.

“I’m gonna figure it out. I was bad tonight. It’s not more complicated than that,” Wembanyama said following Game 1, via Underdog NBA on X, formerly Twitter.

The Spurs usually bounce back after a loss, and it will be interesting to see the adjustments that they make for Game 2, and how the Knicks will counter them. As for Wembanyama, he knows the Spurs will only go as far as he takes them, and he’ll come out with better energy.
