Ruben Amorim wants to sign second £56m Man Utd star with Mason Mount decision made

Former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is keen to sign Lisandro Martinez for AC Milan.

Six months on from leaving his post at Old Trafford, Amorim took the reins at the Rossoneri earlier this month and hopes to oversee a major recruitment drive this summer.

Goncalo Ramos is reportedly in talks to leave Paris Saint-Germain for the Italian giants with the Portuguese head coach also eager to strengthen his options at the back.

Amorim is interested in another of his countrymen in Benfica star Antonio Silva with John Stones, a free agent after his deal with Manchester City expired, among the names they are interested in.

Reports in Italy also suggest Milan will explore an ambitious move for United star Martinez.

Tuttomercatoweb report there is interest in the Argentina international with Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello adding Amorim is ‘crazy’ about the former Ajax star with contact made over a switch to Italy. Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio is also a target.

Martinez, who joined the club in 2022 for £56million, was first choice centre-half alongside Harry Maguire for United under Michael Carrick last season. His current deal at Old Trafford expires next summer although the club do have the option to extend that by a further 12 months.

Reports elsewhere have also claimed Amorim is interested in signing another United star in Mason Mount.

The former Chelsea star has struggled for form and fitness since his switch from Stamford Bridge in 2023 but enjoyed perhaps his best spell at United under the Portuguese coach towards the end of the 2025-26 season, helping the club reach the Europa League final against Tottenham.

However, United are unaware of any discussions over the midfielder. Mount also has no intention of leaving Old Trafford with no plans to sell him this summer.

United are light on midfield options, something they hope to rectify this summer. Kobbie Mainoo is their only recognised central midfielder with Manuel Ugarte facing a long lay-off as a result of the knee injury he suffered at the World Cup with Uruguay.

United are set to sign Ederson from Atalanta in a deal that is expected to be confirmed in July while they remain in talks to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.

Alex Scott of Bournemouth is also a target.
