Breaking: Nottingham Forest confirm striker exit after emotional send-off

Nottingham Forest have sold Taiwo Awoniyi to Coventry City.

The powerful centre forward has finalised a transfer that takes him across the Midlands and will see him play the next phase of his career in Sky Blue.

The 29-year-old has become Coventy’s sixth signing of the summer and the move sees him end his four-year career at the City Ground having scored 23 goals and assisted six others in 103 appearances.

Having joined from Union Berlin in June 2022, Awoniyi was the focal point of the side which retained the club’s hard-won Premier League status when he bagged six in the final four games at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The renaissance of Chris Wood and his own fitness problems, including a serious abdominal injury, have limited him to just six Premier League starts in the last two seasons – but even last term he recovered to play a role in another successful relegation battle.

While the fee is undisclosed CoventryLive have been told it is around the £7million mark.

Awoniyi bid farewell to the City Ground in Sunday’s 2-0 pre-season win over Brest, in which he was given a guard of honour by his former team-mates.

Awoniyi’s departure leaves Wood as undisputed first choice target man, with Igor Jesus ready to build on a first season in English football.

Oliver Glasner could look to add to his options in the final fortnight of the transfer window.
