It’s the news all West Ham fans were dreading: a realistic transfer story about Jarrod Bowen leaving the club.
The Athletic said: ‘Aston Villa have expressed a strong interest in West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen.
No club-to-club discussions have taken place, and Villa view an agreement as currently difficult to do because they need to make player sales. Unai Emery is a huge admirer of the forward, but the 29-year-old, who has four years left on his contract, has not decided whether he wishes to leave.’
Before even bringing a fee into it, we all want Jarrod Bowen to stay, the fans and the club, but some offers are too difficult for him to refuse, and Villa might be one of those.
Jarrod’s father Sam is said to be a lifelong supporter of Aston Villa, so the family connection to the club is there, but that, along with the chance of playing Champions League football, could be enough to dent his West Ham legendary status slightly by leaving the Hammers.
On the potential fee, The Athletic also says: ‘Industry sources say they would expect talks for the player to start at £50m, but sources at West Ham, who were relegated to the Championship last season, have indicated they are not looking to sell.’
Now this makes it feel better, like Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville, who, in an ideal world, we’d like to keep; we’ve priced them high, so if they were to go, we would get the money they are worth.
If Sullivan was still at the helm, we would have had to sell them all, and Bowen probably would have been gone for probably £30m, so the fact Kretinsky has come in and changed that is ideal.
This stance from the club is excellent; the players aren’t untouchable, but if you do want them, you’re not getting them for a cut-price fee just because we were relegated.
