Brian Brobbey reveals why he made big decision on future as Sunderland fend off transfer interest

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has signed a new long-term contract, committing his future to the club until 2031.

The Dutch international has been one of the success stories of Sunderland’s return to the Premier League, but has also attracted attention from some of European football’s biggest names due to his fine form.

However, the forward – and the Black Cats – have moved to end any speculation by tying the player down on a bumper new deal.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Brobbey said: “I’m really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me. Since I arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player.

“Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege. Having played my part in helping this club qualify for European competition is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s an achievement that will always be part of the club’s history.

“I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day. I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of.”

The 24-year-old has become a fan favourite since joining the Black Cats from Ajax in the summer of 2025 in a £21.6million deal, with his power and pace meaning he is a handful for Premier League defences.

Manchester United were among the sides linked with the striker in the summer, with Brobbey’s value now in excess of £50million.

This season has seen the player struck by injury concerns, particularly a hamstring injury picked up on international duty with the Netherlands, but he scored a stunning hat-trick against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in September.

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi added: “We are delighted that Brian has committed his future to Sunderland. This agreement reflects a shared belief in what we can achieve together and a mutual commitment to keep progressing.

“Brian has important qualities, and we believe there is much more to come from him. Our responsibility is to support his development and challenge him every day, so he can fulfil his potential and help the team succeed.

“We want to build a team that grows together, with players who embrace the demands of this club and take pride in representing Sunderland. Brian has an important part to play in that journey, and we look forward to continuing our work together.”

Since joining Sunderland AFC from Ajax on September 1, 2025, Brobbey has made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.
