Browns Announce Hire of Ken Dorsey, Three Other Assistants to Coaching Staff

Ahead of his press conference Monday, the Cleveland Browns made the official announcement that Ken Dorsey was their offensive coordinator. Along with him, the team announced Tommy Rees as the tight ends coach and pass game specialist, Jacques Cesaire as the defensive line coach and Duce Stay was to be the running backs coach.

While all of these hires had been reported and confirmed, the team had not made the official announcement. Dorsey, a former quarterback with the Browns, has coached Cam Newton with the Carolina Panthers and Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills, helping to oversee the best seasons of their respective careers.

“Ken has worked with and elevated some of the top quarterbacks in this league and will bring a fresh approach to our offense. He knows what it takes to be successful at that position as he was one of the most successful college quarterbacks of all time and that has helped him become a tremendous coach. He has a history with this team and knows what the Browns mean to this city. We are very excited to bring in Ken as offensive coordinator.” – Kevin Stefanski via the team’s press release Notably, there is no mention of Dorsey being the quarterbacks coach. Perhaps merely a formality that will be revealed perhaps at the press conference, Dorsey could end up in that role. His predecessor Alex Van Pelt was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last year. It’s also possible the Browns plan to bring in someone else to coach that position group.

Rees’s role was always going to be larger than just coaching tight ends. Being given the title of pass game specialist is a nod to his time as offensive coordinator both at Notre Dame and Alabama. And as Stefanski notes, the Browns want to get some of the innovation straight from the college game.

“Tommy has established himself as one of the top assistant coaches in college football and I have no doubt that will transition to the NFL. He has an incredible football acumen and I look forward to bringing his insight and unique perspective from top college programs to our offense.”

Duce Staley has not only been a running backs coach, but an assistant head coach for three different teams and was part of the Philadelphia Eagles organization when they won the Super Bowl.

“Duce was a tough, hard-nosed running back in this league and brings the mind-set and energy to his coaching style that is needed in the running backs room. He knows how to get the most out of his players and has worked with some of the best running backs in the NFL. We are excited to have him leading our running backs,” said Stefanski.

Stump Mitchell, the man Staley is replacing, also carried the title of running game coordinator. Staley, at least at the moment, only carries the title of running backs coach. The title element is perhaps overrated as Staley will be a critical component in helping to turn around what was a mediocre running game for the Browns in 2022.

Jacques Cesaire spent the past two seasons coaching the defensive front of the Houston Texas, a group that was successful. He’s replacing Ben Bloom who was the defensive line coach in 2022. To this point, Bloom is still with the organization with the possibility of being reassigned in a different role.

In addition to no mention of quarterbacks coach, the other element still up in the air is the offensive line coaching position. Bill Callahan is in the process of leaving for the Tennessee Titans, but that has not been made official. For their part, the Browns may still be looking for his replacement.
