Frank Lampard looks forward to a change of scene in the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa.
Coventry City are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001, but the glamour has quickly worn off for the club. They were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by the reigning champions Arsenal on the opening day of the 2026/27 season, and it was a signal of what was to come.
A bitter blow came from a 1-0 loss to fellow promoted outfit Hull City, and they lost to Manchester City by the same scoreline. Coventry’s second home game of the campaign came against Brighton, and a 5-0 defeat worsened the record of the team that is sitting at rock bottom in the standings.
‘The pressure of the Premier League for the players is new’
One position above Coventry are the Villans, whose only point came from a 0-0 draw against Hull.
Unai Emery is getting his side back into shape after the spine of the side had been ripped up during the summer transfer window. His track record speaks for itself, and there is plenty of young talent to be intrigued by in the ranks of the team, so Lampard expects a big test at the CBS Arena.
I’m very excited for the occasion and for the fans. We got to the Premier League for these kinds of fixtures. I know this is a game that the fans hold dear, and they haven’t had so many of these in recent years.
“I understand the occasion and atmosphere will be big, and hopefully we can tap into that ourselves. We want to get the right result for our fans. We have to understand we’re playing against a Premier League and a Champions League team. We’re happy to have the support at home.
“It has a different feeling to what the Premier League stress brings. Cup football is great at this stage of the season to get a game that means so much to the fans; I think you should tap slightly into the emotions of it.”
