The Los Angeles Rams have been without star pass rusher Myles Garrett since their regular season opener in Australia due to a right knee injury that required surgery.
Garrett was placed on injured reserve after undergoing the operation and had to miss a minimum of four games. However, some reports suggested the two-time Defensive Player of the Year could be out as many as six weeks.
Garrett is eligible to return for the Rams’ game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6, but head coach Sean McVay said he still needs time to recover and won’t resume practicing just yet, via Zach Edwards of TheRams.com:
Rams head coach Sean McVay on Tuesday said the team still does not plan to open outside linebacker Myles Garrett’s 21-day practice window this week as they prepare to take on the Cardinals on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Week 6.
When asked on Tuesday if the team will start Garrett’s clock this week, head coach Sean McVay said “we will not, not this week.”
The Rams gave up a massive haul to acquire Garrett during the offseason, so it makes sense that they don’t want to rush him back and potentially risk making the injury worse.
Garrett was limited throughout training camp with lower-body soreness and the knee injury, so it has been a while since he has been fully healthy. However, McVay said last month that Garrett was making a lot of progress and compared him to Wolverine.
With Garrett sidelined, the Rams have been able to make do with a defensive line that still includes Aaron Donald, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fisk and Poona Ford.
Rams make change at kicker
The Rams are coming off of a difficult Monday Night Football loss to the Buffalo Bills, where special teams once again played a major role in a negative way. Kicker Harrison Mevis missed a 50-yard field goal in the first quarter, then had the game-winning field goal attempt in overtime blocked.
McVay said after the game that he was evaluating everything with special teams, as this is the second consecutive season where that unit has cost the team games. The team decided to part ways with Mevis and replaced him by signing Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad.
Grupe never took a kick for the Jets, but previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, making 86 of his 105 field goals attempts and going 96-of-98 on extra points.
