Ollie Palmer says Wrexham fans wanted him to emulate Paul Mullin after beating Hull City, ‘never going to do that’

Wrexham are in the hat for the second round of the Carabao Cup and have striker Ollie Palmer to thank for his heroics against Hull City.

Wrexham appeared to be crashing out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle with just minutes to play against Hull City.

Elliot Lee’s opener had put Wrexham ahead, but Hull hit back with three goals from Oli McBurnie, Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks.

The Tigers were minutes away from a comfortable passage into the second round, but have instead been eliminated.

So, what happened in injury time? Well, Ollie Palmer happened.

Palmer came off the bench to score twice late in the day, forcing a penalty shootout – and Wrexham scored all five spot kicks to advance at Hull’s expense.

Ollie Palmer on Paul Mullin celebration

Palmer has been made available by Wrexham and could still leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

Tuesday’s heroics could change the landscape over Palmer’s future, and Wrexham fans will cherish his display as a truly special moment.

Some may have wondered if they would ever see Palmer in action at the STōK Cae Ras again, with a departure expected throughout the summer.

If this is to be Palmer’s final home appearance, then he will have gone out in style with a remarkable cameo off the bench.

Wrexham fans showed their love for Palmer after victory was secured, but the striker stopped short of emulating Paul Mullin.

Palmer has told Wrexham’s official YouTube channel that supporters wanted him to copy Mullin’s celebration, in which he would rally supporters with fist pumps, much like Jurgen Klopp would do in front of the Kop at Anfield.

However, Palmer noted that he would ‘never’ do that, seemingly reserving those honours for his former strike partner.

“Really special,” said Palmer when asked about his moment with the supporters.

“I think they wanted me to do Mulls’ celebration at the end, but I was never going to do that.

“But it was emotional, it was like rolling back the years, with number 35! I really enjoyed it, but more importantly, we’re through to the next round and it’s a fantastic cup to go on and try to go as far as possible,” he added.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin both among the goals

Wrexham’s progress continues, but fans will forever reserve special places in their heart for both Palmer and Mullin.

Those two strikers caused mayhem together in the Wrexham attack, but Mullin joined Wigan Athletic over the summer.

Palmer could yet follow him out of Wrexham, so Tuesday’s display will live long in the memory.

To make it even more perfect, Mullin grabbed his first competitive goal for Wigan on Tuesday night.

Mullin scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Notts County, sending Wigan through to the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Seeing Mullin and Palmer on the scoresheet on the same day will bring back brilliant memories for Wrexham fans, with both players cherished as heroes for many years to come.
