In the end it looks like Aston Villa have won the race to sign Wolverhampton midfielder João Gomes. Fresh reports from Brazil claim the transfer is now at an advanced stage.
Brazil’s Globo Esporte reports Villa have agreed a deal worth £38m (around €44m) for the 25-year-old, who has already been released by Wolves to undergo his medical before signing for Unai Emery’s side.
The move comes just days after Manchester United abandoned their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Éderson following his medical examinations. That prompted the Red Devils to renew contact over João Gomes, as we covered earlier. Meanwhile, Liverpool also approached Wolves to understand the conditions of a potential transfer.
However, according to the Brazilian outlet, Aston Villa have ultimately won the battle for the midfielder.
Tielemans sale creates opening
João Gomes’ move is directly linked to Aston Villa’s decision to sell Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.
With Emery losing one of his key midfielders, Villa quickly identified João Gomes as the preferred replacement. They have now reached an agreement worth £38m (€44m).
John Townley of Birmingham Live first reported the deal. Then Globo Esporte (arguably Brazil’s biggest sports news outlet) subsequently confirmed the information. They added that Wolves have already authorised the player to complete his medical.
The information is likely coming from the player’s camp.
Atlético Madrid collapse changed everything
João Gomes had been expected to join Atlético Madrid earlier this summer after the Spanish club agreed a €45m (£39m) deal with Wolves.
That transfer collapsed after the well-publicised fallout involving agent Jorge Mendes and Bernardo Silva. The Brazilian then was unexpectedly back on the market.
Manchester United and Liverpool both made contact once Atlético walked away, but Aston Villa have moved quickest to complete the signing.
Should the move be completed as expected, the former Flamengo midfielder leaves Molineux after two and a half seasons, having established himself as one of Wolves’ standout performers and earned Brazil call-ups during his time in the Premier League.
