The Marco Silva saga appears to have gained another subplot, with Jorge Cuenca now being linked with a move away from Fulham alongside his manager.

There is some history here. Benfica were interested in Cuenca when he left Villarreal in 2024, but Fulham moved first and secured his signature for €6.7m (£5.7m).

In effect, Silva beat Benfica to the player once already. Now the Portuguese side could try again, this time with the added advantage of offering a reunion with the coach.

Portuguese newspaper Record reported Benfica’s long-standing interest in the defender remains alive, almost two years after they first looked at signing him.

According to the story, Cuenca is open to several possibilities this summer and would consider a move to Lisbon, particularly if it meant continuing to work under the coach who brought him to Craven Cottage.

Silva connection strengthens Benfica interest

The report states Benfica see two major reasons to pursue the Spaniard. The first is his left-footed profile, something the club are actively prioritising as they reshape their defence.

The second is his relationship with Silva. Cuenca enjoyed an increased role at Fulham after Calvin Bassey departed for AFCON, and Record suggest the defender feels he has developed significantly under the Portuguese manager.

He went on to make 22 appearances for Fulham last season as his importance within the squad grew. That connection could become significant if Silva completes his expected move to Benfica.

Fulham not rushing towards any decision

Despite Benfica’s interest, Record make it clear Fulham are in no hurry to discuss a sale.

The newspaper reports the London club do not want to make any decision on Cuenca’s future until their managerial situation is fully resolved, and that could take a while. They have also not established an asking price for the defender.

That creates a potential complication for Benfica.

The Portuguese side are looking to strengthen following Nicolás Otamendi’s departure, but Fulham are under little pressure to move quickly. Cuenca remains under contract and the club appear comfortable waiting before deciding what their next step will be.

For now, Benfica’s interest is genuine and Silva’s likely arrival in Lisbon has given it fresh momentum. Whether that develops into formal negotiations may depend on how quickly Fulham settle matters closer to home.
