Fulham turn to manager they know well as Marco Silva replacement hunt intensifies

Fulham are considering Famalicão manager Hugo Oliveira as they step up their efforts to find a replacement for Marco Silva.

O Jogo report that the 46-year-old is an option being looked at by Fulham’s leadership as they seek Silva’s replacement at Craven Cottage.

Portuguese managers wanted

Fulham are on the hunt for a new manager following Silva’s departure to Benfica, where he has replaced Jose Mourinho.

According to the newspaper, they are currently focused on other Portuguese managers. They report that ‘there is a long list of candidates’ for the position.

The strongest option was Kieran McKenna. But he has decided to step away from football after stepping down at Ipswich Town. That’s led Fulham to Portugal, where two names are currently leading the race.

Ruben Amorim was a third name on the list. But he has no intention of returning to a team in England he considers as having objectives which are ‘inferior’ to Manchester United’s.

So, the options for Fulham at this moment in time are Huge Oliveira and Abel Ferreira. The latter, though, may be hard to get as he has regularly rejected advances to leave Palmeiras.

Already worked at Fulham

Oliveira is the more likely option. He led Famalicão to their highest ever finish and narrowly missed out on Europe thanks to Torreense’s win in the cup this season.

He’s already worked at Fulham under Silva as his assistant too. He was also with him at Hull City, Watford and Everton. That means he knows the Premier League and England well and should have no issue settling in at Craven Cottage again.

Fulham, for their part, are aiming to secure an appointment next week. There is no indication of whether they’ve made a move as yet. Frank Lampard, Scott Parker, Ange Postecoglou, Thomas Frank and Kjetil Knutsen are all names being linked with the role as well.

But it is Hugo Oliveira who, currently, seems to be foremost in their thinking. His previous experience at the club could give him an advantage over the rest.
