Sunderland are working hard to make their first new signing of the summer transfer window as the Black Cats prepare for a first-ever venture into the Europa League.
As it stands, the only business conducted by the Stadium of Light hierarchy has been outgoings with Eliezer Mayenda joining French club Rennes and Dan Neil and Nazariy Rusyn completing moves to Rangers and Karpaty Lviv, respectively. However, there is a determination to boost Regis Le Bris’ squad ahead of one of the most exciting seasons in the club’s long and proud history – and the latest name to be linked with a move to Wearside is Serie A winger Matias Soule. But what do we know about the Roma star?
Who is Matias Soule?

Although born in Argentina, the 23-year-old winger has spent the entirety of his senior career in Serie A during spells with Juventus, Frosinone and Roma. Soule came through the academy systems at Kimberley and Velez Sarsfield in his home country before moving to Italy to join Juve’s youth set-up in 2020 and quickly established himself as a promising wide player with the Serie A giants. After making his Serie C debut with Juve’s Under-23s side in a 2-1 win against Pergoletesse in August 2021, Soule found himself named in a first-team squad for the first time just under a month later – although he had to wait until a 2-0 win at Salernitana in November of the same year to make his senior debut. Just one further substitute appearance followed during the 2021/22 season – but Soule did grab his first goal against Sampdoria in one of 13 first-team appearances during the following season.
In total, the winger made 21 appearances for Juve’s senior side and also went on to catch the eye during a loan stint with league rivals Frosinone as he scored 11 goals and provided three assists during a season-long stay during the 2023/24 campaign. Amid interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, Soule joined Roma in a reported £24m move during the following summer and has gone on to score 12 goals and provide 13 assists in 81 appearances over the last two seasons.
Has Matias Soule made an international appearance?
No, not at senior level anyway! The winger has appeared for Argentina at several youth age groups and appeared alongside the likes of Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho and Brighton’s Facundo Buonanotte at the under-20 level. He has received a senior call-up after he was named in the Argentina squad for a World Cup qualifier against Chile in September 2024 – but he remained as an unused substitute as Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala netted in a 3-0 win for Lionel Scaloni’s side. Soule was named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection for this summer’s World Cup finals – but his name was absent when Scaloni cut down to his 25-man squad in May.
What is Matias Soulé’s contract situation at Roma, and who are his agents?
Soule initially put pen to paper on a five-year agreement when he joined Roma from Juventus during the summer of 2024, and that remains in place, meaning he still has three years remaining on his current contract. The winger is represented by Martin Ariel Guastadisegno and, along with Real Betis defender Valentin Gomez, is his highest-profile client.
What has Matias Soule said about his future?
Not a lot – although the Roma star did seem unsure about his future with the Serie A club when questioned about what could lie ahead after arriving back in Italy to prepare for pre-season training. When asked if he will start the season with Roma, he answered, “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.”
What has been said about Matias Soule’s Sunderland links?

Reports in Italy over the weekend have suggested Sunderland had made tentative enquiries over the winger’s availability during the summer transfer window. However, further reports have now claimed Guastadisegno has travelled to England to meet with Sunderland and Premier League rivals Fulham to discuss a possible deal. There are suggestions Roma will demand a fee of around £30m for the 23-year-old.
